How to choose the right neighbourhood for your family
Schools, commute, community and budget. A simple checklist to help you compare areas before you start viewing homes.
The right home in the wrong area rarely feels right for long. Before you start viewing homes, it helps to decide what matters most to your family and compare a few neighbourhoods side by side.
1. Daily life comes first
Think about where you go every week: work, school, your place of worship or community centre, family and friends, your favourite grocery store. Try the commute at the time you would actually travel, by car and by transit.
2. Schools
If you have children, check which schools serve each address. School boundaries can change from one street to the next, so always confirm with the school board for the exact address.
3. Community and services
Many families feel at home faster when familiar shops, restaurants, places of worship and community organizations are nearby. Walk around on a weekend and see how the area feels.
4. Parks, safety and noise
Visit at different times of day. Look for parks and playgrounds, traffic on the street, and anything that might be noisy, such as highways, rail lines or busy plazas.
5. Budget and type of home
The same budget can buy a condo in one area and a townhouse in another. Decide which matters more to you, the location or the size and type of home, and be open to nearby areas you have not considered.
6. Future plans
Ask about new transit, construction and development nearby. They can affect traffic and noise now, and convenience and value later.
